funded projects.

SUCCESSFULLY
CONCLUDED PROJECTS:
Between 2007 and 2013 the Funds Unit section within
the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture managed a number of projects which
were co-financed by the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) 2007-2013.
The
following is a list of successfully concluded projects:
EFF311 -
Upgrading of Landing Facilities at Mġarr, Gozo
This project was aimed at developing all the
required infrastructure at the biggest designated fishing port in Gozo, that of
Mġarr. The implementation of this project has had a positive impact on the
working conditions of the fisheries control officers and also improved their
monitoring capabilities.
EFF312 -
The Building of a Fish Market and the Infrastructure of Marketing and
Processing Plant
The scope of this project was that of relocating the
auction sale activity of the old Valletta fish market to a more modern facility
in Marsa. The new fish market was also equipped with state of the art
equipment.
EFF313 -
Enhancing Fish Consumption through Education/Awareness and Diversification
This project contributed towards more sustainable
fishing efforts, diversification of fish types and fish products being sold in
the local market, whilst increasing sector competitiveness. Through the use of
publicity and marketing strategies, this project focused on making the general
public more aware of the nutritional benefits of fish.
EFF315 -
Upgrading of Designated Ports at Marsa, St Paul’s Bay and Marsascala
The main scope of this project was that of developing
the necessary infrastructure in three designated ports being: Marsa, St. Paul’s Bay and Marsascala, thus
facilitating landing and control activities .
EFF316 -
Development of Infrastructure at the Marsaxlokk Designated Port
The main scope of this project was that of
developing the necessary infrastructure to improve the service provision of
fish landing in Malta’s busiest designated port. The implementation of this
project has facilitated the landing of fish in Marsaxlokk,
ONGOING
PROJECTS:
The European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) is
the fund for the EU's Maritime and Fisheries Policies for 2014-2020. It is one
of the five (5) European Structural and Investment (ESI) Funds which complement
each other and seek to promote a growth and job based recovery in Europe.
Under the EMFF Operational Programme, Malta has been
allocated a contribution of €22,627,422
(EMFF share).
The
EMFF Fund aims to fulfil the following objectives:
- Helps fishermen in the transition to sustainable
fishing;
- Supports coastal communities in diversifying their
economies;
- Finances projects that create new jobs and improve
quality of life along European coasts;
- Makes it easier for applicants to access financing.
The
EMFF Operational Programme 2014-2020 has six Union Priorities being:
- Union
Priority 1 – Promoting environmentally sustainable,
resource-efficient, innovative, competitive and knowledge-based fisheries.
- Union
Priority 2 – Fostering environmentally sustainable,
resource-efficient, innovative, competitive and knowledge-based
aquaculture.

Priority 3 – Fostering the implementation of the Common
Fisheries Policy
