Olive tree cultivation and olive oil production

Close up of olive tree with olives

The olive oil sector in Malta has old origins and albeit being small, local farmers produce distinct olive oil, which is appreciated in the local market and by foreigners alike. In this regard, several olive mills had been built during the recent years and licenced for the production of Olive Oil, whereby such registration is necessary for the required monitoring and controls of this product.

Whilst the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) is the national entity responsible for the marketing standards of olive oil, the Agriculture Directorate is to ensure the traceability of olive oil products on the local market and strengthen the consumers' confidence in Maltese Olive products.
